Immunotherapies could change kidney cancer care, studies suggest

(CNN)The way doctors typically approach kidney cancer treatment could be evolving. Targeted cancer therapies are drugs or other substances that block cancer growth by interfering with specific molecules that are involved in the growth, progression and spread of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. Immunotherapy is a treatment approach that harnesses certain parts of the body’s own immune system to target and attack a disease, such as cancer. This approach can come in many forms — vaccines, antibody or cellular therapies, or drugs — and can be administrated through injections, pills or capsules, topical ointments or creams, or a catheter. An immunotherapy can also be combined with another therapy as a form of treatment, as seen in the two …

Deer in 24 states infected with chronic wasting disease

(CNN) Chronic wasting disease has been detected in wild deer, elk or moose in 24 states, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning hunters to avoid handling or eating potentially infected meat. Currently, there is no evidence the disease can spread to humans, but the CDC warned hunters to be cautious around potentially infected animals. It advised people not to handle or eat meat from deer and elk that seem sick or have been found dead. It says latex or rubber gloves should be worn when handling the meat and contact kept to a minimum — especially when handling organs such as the brain or spinal cord. In deer and other cervids, the disease has an incubation period …

Gene therapy first to ‘halt’ blindness

The treatment was carried out under local anaesthetic last month at Oxford Eye Hospital by Robert MacLaren, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Oxford. He told BBC news: “A genetic treatment administered early on to preserve vision in patients who would otherwise lose their sight would be a tremendous breakthrough in ophthalmology and certainly something I hope to see in the near future.” Mrs Osborne, 80, is the first of 10 patients with AMD taking part in a trial of the gene therapy treatment, manufactured by Gyroscope Therapeutics, funded by Syncona, the Wellcome Trust founded investment firm. What is AMD? The macula is part of the retina and responsible for central vision and fine detail. In age-related macular degeneration, …

School threat system fields thousands of tips in first month

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A threat reporting system now required for all Pennsylvania schools fielded more than 4,900 tips in its first month, about a third of them considered serious enough to pass along to local police and school officials. (CNN)Almost a year after West Virginia teachers and other school employees shut down schools across the state, demanding higher pay and better benefits, union officials announced Monday night they would go on strike again. The bill has bounced around the state Legislature for the past few weeks, spurring worry among education advocates and teachers in West Virginia, and some changes were made in the House of Delegates to walk back some of the most sizable proposals. Pressures came to a head on Monday when the bill returned to the state Senate, which added an amendment that reinstated a lower number of charter schools and would allow for 1,000 education savings accounts. The bill in its amended state passed the Senate …

Brexit healthcare worries for Brits in Spain

Image caption About 70,000 British pensioners live in Spain A S1 certificate is available to anyone in receipt of a state pension, and to some workers who are sent overseas on a temporary basis by their UK employers. The system currently saves the NHS about £450m a year. In 2017, a senior health department official told a parliamentary select committee that Spain charges an average of £2,300 for every pensioner it treats, compared with £4,500 charged by the NHS. Yet there are no guarantees that this arrangement will continue under the Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposals to protect the rights of EU citizens, including the 1.2 million Britons living elsewhere in the EU. London has said the S1 certificate may …

The old men vying to lead Africa’s youngest population

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)On first look, not much separates the two front-runners contesting Nigeria’s presidential election. Both are men in their 70s with previous experience of high-level politics. Both are from the same ethnic group. And both are Muslims from the north of the country. Cory Booker Woos Iowans With Love-Heavy Brand Of Progressive Patriotism

WATERLOO, Iowa ― New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker’s favorite presidential campaign-trail yarn ― and he has a lot of them ― is about how his parents, two of IBM’s first black executives, overcame housing market discrimination to raise him and his brother in a predominantly white neighborhood in one of his state’s suburbs. Recounting the tale Friday afternoon to an audience of about 100 Democrats at a community college in Waterloo, Booker marveled at the far-reaching power of individual political sacrifices. It’s a testament, he declared with excitement in his voice, to his deeply held belief that “love is a radical force.” On the same weekend that Sen. (D-Mass.) officially with a pledge to “fight back” against the waged by …

Most new hips and knees ‘last 25 years’

‘May last even longer’ Nearly 200,000 of the operations were performed in 2017 in England and Wales, with most carried out on people between 60 and 80 years old. Dr Jonathan Evans, orthopaedic registrar, lead study author and research fellow at Bristol Medical School, said: “At best, the NHS has only been able to say how long replacements are designed to last, rather than referring to actual evidence from multiple patients’ experiences of joint replacement surgery. “Given the improvement in technology and techniques in the last 25 years, we expect that hip or knee replacements put in today may last even longer.” As the ageing population grows, and life expectancy rises, this becomes even more important, Dr Evans added. Hospitals …
