I face death every day of my life. But coming out and finding love was the greatest challenge of all.

“How Old Are You?” It’s a simple question, but it always broke my heart. In my late teens, I would answer that question and hide the turmoil, heartache, and anxiety that I endured just before I answered. In a single moment, I would think of all of my friends who weren’t able to be asked that question anymore; Makenzie, Kevin, Jacob, Nicole… taken by a disease that I lived with too. It brought a reality to my life that no one else my age could really understand. The mistakes that we all make as teenagers in high school aren’t forgiven by time in my case; Cystic Fibrosis wasn’t going to be forgiving. It’s a genetic condition of the respiratory and …

I know what it feels like to look in the mirror …

A 75-year-long study just revealed the key to happiness, and most of us are getting it so very wrong.

There are lots of things that can contribute to happiness and fulfillment, and they vary with each individual. A 75-year-long study, however, has found one common element that’s believed to play a pivotal role in most people’s genuine, longstanding happiness. Good ol’ fashioned friendship. This study, which is considered the longest ongoing study on human happiness, started at Harvard University in 1938 with 724 men, 60 of whom are still alive today (women were added later because misogyny). After decades of observation, one of the study’s leaders, Robert Waldinger, came to this conclusion: “Good relationships keep us happier and healthier,” he stated in a TED Talk on the subject.   That’s right, friends. You don’t have to make millions of …

Our daughter’s anxiety disorder went undiagnosed for years. Here’s what I wish we’d known.

We knew something wasn’t right with our daughter. We just didn’t know what was wrong. As a parent, it can be hard to determine when a child’s behaviors fall into “weird but normal” and when something is truly “off.” Kids go through phases. They struggle as they figure out their changing minds and emotions. They get nervous or needy for a spell, and then they’re okay. But sometimes they’re not okay. Sometimes a phase lasts too long to be a phase, and you have to dig to discover what’s really going on. Our oldest daughter had always had some intermittent nervousness, but nothing extraordinary. As she entered the teen years, she seemed to be more anxious more often, but we …

The measles outbreak has hit New York City. Literature targeting Orthodox Jews is behind it.

The first major measles outbreak in New York State this year may have started in upstate New York, but it’s officially reached the epicenter — New York City. For several months, officials in New York City have been encouraging members of ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities in the Brooklyn area of New York City to vaccinate their children in an attempt to squash the rapidly growing number of measles cases in the region. In addition to providing education about the vaccine and talking to local rabbis, they have also tried keeping unvaccinated children from attending school. Despite those efforts, there have been 285 confirmed cases of the infection since September with 21 of them leading to hospitalization. It’s the largest measles outbreak …

She started doing track and field at age 60. Now, at 84, she’s a competitive pole vaulter.

There’s a new Flo on the field, and she’s proving that age really is just a number. While many of us hope to make it to our eighties in relatively good health, Flo Filion Meiler is setting a new bar for aging well. The 84-year-old from Shelbourne, Vermont is currently at the World Masters Athletics Championship Indoor in Poland, where she is competing in track and field events including the 60-meter hurdles, 800-meter run, 4 x 200m relay, triple jump, long jump, pentathlon, and pole vault. That’s right. Pole vaulting at 84 years old. She’s guaranteed a win in the pole vault since—perhaps unsurprisingly—she’s the only competitor in her age group. Four years ago she set a world record for …

Measles stricken New York County has banned unvaccinated kids from public places.

Haverstraw along the Hudson River via Alexisrael / Wikimedia Commons Ground zero for the current U.S. measles epidemic is Rockland County, New York, about 40 minutes north of New York City. Over 153 of the 314 measles cases reported in the U.S. in 2019 have been in Rockland County. Measles is a serious health problem that can be fatal. So Rockland County has decided to stick it to the parents responsible for the outbreak by barring their children from public spaces for the next 30 days. If an unvaccinated child is found at a shopping center, business, restaurant, school, or place of worship their parents will be fined $500. “We will not sit idly by while children in our community …

To combat a terrible measles epidemic, Italy is no longer putting up with unvaccinated kids.

via Sanofi Pasteur / Flickr Between 2017 and 2018 the number of global measles cases increased by 48.1% according to calculations by UNICEF. Recent outbreaks have been caused by poor health infrastructure, low awareness, complacency and, in the developed world, a backlash against vaccinations. Even though report after report shows there is no link between vaccinations and autism, a small percentage of people in the developed world refuse to vaccinate their children resulting in outbreaks of diseases that were nearly eradicated. In the U.S., children must have the following vaccinations to attend public school: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis; polio, measles, and rubella. However, in 47 states, parents can get an exception for personal reasons. The only states that prohibit such exemptions …

Selma Blair just rocked her first appearance since her MS diagnosis with a cape and cane.

Photo by Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images When Selma Blair first announced her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in October 2018, she said she wanted to bring hope to others who have the disease. On Oscar Sunday, Blair did just that when the actress walked the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscar party looking like a total goddess. Blair, clad in a stunning gown accessorized with a cape and a cane, got emotional at the significance of the moment. “It took so much to be here,” said Blair, who was greeted by a round of applause. Blair then posed for photos, proving you can still ooze glamor from your pores even after a MS diagnosis. Blair posted an emotional post on Instagram celebrating …
