The science behind the climate crisis

(CNN)Not sure how we found ourselves in this climate crisis? Carbon dioxide is called a “greenhouse gas” because of its ability to trap solar radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere like a blanket and heat up the planet — acting the same way a greenhouse keeps plants warm and growing. All of this carbon dioxide is warming the planet. CO2 naturally occurs in the atmosphere and without it, the planet would be too cold to support life. But human activity, like the burning of fossil fuels for energy, has increased the gas to dangerous levels, increasing the thickness of that blanket to the point that the Earth is heating up. Before the Industrial Revolution, the levels fluctuated naturally over many thousands …

Vegetarians might have higher risk of stroke than meat eaters, study says

(CNN)Non-meat diets have soared in popularity with many people ditching beef, pork and chicken in pursuit of health and environmental benefits and concerns about animal welfare. The exact reasons for this higher risk found in vegetarians are not clear, said Tong. It is possible that this is due to “very low cholesterol levels or very low levels of some nutrients,” she said. “There is some evidence which suggests that very low cholesterol levels might be associated with a slightly higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke,” she said. Similarly, other research points to deficiencies of some nutrients, like vitamin B12, may be linked to a higher risk of stroke, said Tong. Still, some researchers were skeptical of the stroke finding. The research …

Why industry is going green on the quiet

Secret sustainability is on the rise, with companies loath to talk about their ecological credentials. Why? Theres a factory in Asia that uses only a single litre of water to make a pair of jeans. Thats 346 litres less than its jeans in 2015. Wouldnt you love to buy your jeans from this amazingly innovative factory? Me too, but I dont even know what its called. The manufacturer in question does not want to tell anyone about its groundbreaking water-conserving techniques not even the companies it supplies. It is one of many practising secret sustainability, whereby innovations are silently enacted and kept from the rest of the industry. This phenomenon is not limited to the clothing industry. The UK organic …

Why western liberals have long picked the wrong historical hero | Kenan Malik

A newly discovered text shows how the battles of the past are still being fought today Lost in the library of a small American college has lain a text by one of Englands foremost philosophers that no one knew he had written. Reasons for tolerateing Papists equally with others, a work by the early Enlightenment philosopher John Locke was discovered in announced last week, has been greeted with excitement by both philosophers and historians. It is significant, too, in throwing light upon political debates that have as much relevance now as they did 400 years ago. Locke is central to modern politics because of his foundational role in liberalism. His A Letter Concerning Toleration, published in 1689, is a key …

Almost 900 Migrants Affected By Mumps Outbreak In US Detention Facilities, CDC Reports

Australian Medical Association Declares Climate Change A Health Emergency But What Does That Mean?

Australia’s pre-eminent medical association has officially declared a climate change health emergency in a statement published Monday, following in the footsteps of similar bodies in the US and UK.  “The AMA accepts the scientific evidence on climate change and its impact on human health and human wellbeing,” said Dr Tony Bartone, president of the Australian Medical Association (AMA). “The scientific reality is that climate change affects health and wellbeing by increasing the situations in which infectious diseases can be transmitted, and through more extreme weather events, particularly heatwaves.”  Though the AMA has acknowledged the fact that human-driven climate change will have a serious adverse effect on public health since 2004, this is them formally recognizing climate change as a health emergency. At …

A 76-Year-Old Woman Was Pecked To Death By Her Pet Rooster

An elderly woman has died after being attacked by a rooster on her rural property in Australia in what experts are describing as a “fatal rooster attack”. The 76-year-old unnamed woman was reportedly collecting eggs when a domestic rooster pecked her lower left leg, causing “significant hemorrhage with collapse and death”. An autopsy of her left leg showed that it was covered in sticky dried blood near two small bleeding lacerations, one of which was located immediately over a “perforated large varix,” write medical experts in the journal Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology. Her death was therefore due to “exsanguination” – blood being drained from the body – from “bleeding varicose veins” following the attack by her rooster.   The woman …
