50 Memes That Make Fun Of The Idea That Video Games Cause Violence

Some myths have more lives than cats and Mario combined. That’s the way plenty of us feel whenever we see someone blaming video games for every new armed atrocity that shocks the world. Look, we get it, video games are an easy target. It’s far easier to blame them for somebody acting violently than it is to confront the tangled, messy, complex web of interrelated reasons that’s actually at fault. But it doesn’t mean that we should power down our critical thinking, just because we want easy answers. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, and other politicians recently used video games as a scapegoat to (at least in part) explain the recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton. …

Mass shootings test Mitch McConnell’s iron grip

(CNN)President Donald Trump didn’t cite new gun legislation in his public remarks Monday, following the pair of deadly mass shootings over the weekend, and he won’t have to worry about any such bills so long as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the proud obstructionist of Capitol Hill, keeps them off the Senate floor. “That’s why I call myself the Grim Reaper,” he said of Democrats during an appearance at a Kentucky political event over the weekend. “I’m killing their socialist agenda.” His campaign tweeted a photo of homemade yard sign headstones, a questionable move coming hours after the shootings in Texas unfolded. The problem with McConnell’s boast of protecting the country from socialist takeover is that the bipartisan bills passed through …

Men Who Send Unsolicited Dick Pics Are Usually Narcissistic and Sexist, Study Confirms

New research reveals that there are only two types of men who send unsolicited pictures of their genitalia to women: those that are narcissistic and sexist, and those that literally have a dick for a face. Of the 1,087 men who took part in the study, none fell into the latter category, yet 48 percent admitted to having previously sent unrequested dick pics to women. Publishing their findings in The Journal of Sex Research, the study authors used a series of questionnaires to evaluate participants’ personality traits, and found that “men who sent dick pics reported higher levels of narcissism as well as ambivalent and hostile sexism.” Narcissists tend to have an excessive admiration for themselves, often believing they are better …

Are Your Fries Under Threat From An Incoming Seagull? Stare It Down, Say Scientists

When you’re tucking into a tasty piece of battered fish and admiring a peaceful ocean view the threat of being mugged constantly surrounds you. Winged thieves could descend from the skies at any moment, tearing your delicious meal from your lap. But now, thankfully, we have a scientifically proven way of tackling the problem head-on: stare the gulls down. Concerned by the impact these feathered crooks are having on innocent people’s day to day lives, researchers at the University of Exeter in the UK took it upon themselves to find a solution. Equipped with nothing more than a bag of fries, they headed to the Cornish seaside to conduct a scientific experiment. The team tried to include 74 participants, but …

Young offenders ‘set up to fail’ on their release

The report also found “inadequate” planning to protect others from the risk posed by those released. Many of the hundreds of children released each year from YOIs are categorised as having “profound” needs for support and follow-up care – but the report pointed to “systemic” weaknesses in meeting these needs. ‘Poor practice’ In one example highlighted in the report, Nawaz, a 16-year-old boy with a history of possessing offensive weapons and robbery, was released and allowed to go home to his parents with “no consideration” of the threat he might pose to his family. There were three young children in the house and within weeks of his return adult men “wearing balaclavas” arrived at the house and threatened the family. …

Euphoria review so explicit it makes Skins look positively Victorian

Zendaya is astonishing as the self-destructive Rue in a teen sexndrugs drama that hides hidden depths behind the Instagram angst Few new series have achieved such notoriety with quite the same speed as Sky Atlantic), the teen-populated Skins look positively Victorian. This pilot episode serves as both a taste and a warning: if you can accept that it depicts its world with the flippancy of an Instagram scroll, then its rewards are vast, particularly in terms of its emotional depth. But early on it brims with pills, drink, apps, erect penises, loving sex, cruel sex and nude pics, ever present and lurking, but horrifyingly casual, as if they are an inexorable part of these particular fictional, middle-class, suburban teenagers existences. …
