The truth about late-term abortions in the US: they’re very rare

Republicans are pushing to ban abortions as early as 15 weeks while Democrats focus on loosening restrictions. Mona Chalabi illustrates the facts The debate about abortion in the US seems to be taking place on shifting ground. Republicans have recently made efforts to ban abortions as early as 15 weeks in Missouri and late-term abortions. Late-term abortions are particularly controversial. Especially when the inflammatory language deployed by the Donald Trump in his State of the Union address claims that Democrats want to make legislative changes would allow a baby to be ripped from the mothers womb moments from birth. But late-term abortions are also very rare. In 2015, more than found this is particularly true for poorer women. Looking through …

The congresswoman faced bad-faith claims of antisemitism at a time when Trump is making America more dangerous for Jews Sign up for the tweeted a photo of Rolling Stone magazine, on which she is pictured posing next to three of the new young congresswomen. A picture is worth 1,000 words but [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Jahana Hayes] and Nancy on the cover of @RollingStone is worth millions of dreams to women and girls across America, Pelosi said. To them we say: know your power. Know your worth. Have a plan. And be ready. While those are very inspirational words, Pelosi could have done with taking them a little more to heart herself. Instead she, and other Democratic leaders, have spent …

Finland is one of the best countries in the world to be a mom. How does the U.S. compare?

Even among highly developed nations, there are vast disparities in the experience of becoming a mom. We all know that the Nordic countries consistently rank sky high when it comes to many measures of wellness—happiness, health, quality of life, life expectancy, education, and the list goes on. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Finland is frequently touted as one of the best places to become a mother. As CBS This Morning points out, the country has the lowest maternal mortality rate in the world. The Finnish government’s maternity and paternity leave policies put many countries to shame. Residents enjoy top-notch, low-cost healthcare, which includes free checkups for kids after birth. To top it off, every new mom receives a box …

Worldwide, cases of measles have also surged to “alarmingly high levels,”  “This is a wake up call,” Henriette …

If America can find $716bn for the military, it can fund the Green New Deal | Rev William Barber and Phyllis Bennis

If we redirected the trillions spent on fruitless wars, funding Medicare for All and a Green New Deal is perfectly realistic At long last the political debate in the worlds richest country is vibrant with proposals that would help the most vulnerable in our society. And what do we hear in response? A growing chorus of naysayers. challenged Senator Dianne Feinstein to support a Green New Deal, she told them theres no money to pay for it. She probably didnt expect those eight- and 10- and 11-year-old kids to respond immediately: Yes, there is, theres tons of money going to the military. Feinstein responded condescendingly that the military does important things with that money. Our never-ending wars say otherwise. Last …

Dove is offering $5,000 to dads without parental leave at their jobs.

The workplace has daddy issues. While it’s common for a new mother to take maternity leave postpartum, there’s still a stigma surrounding paternity leave. Most dads don’t have access to paid time off to experience their child’s crucial first few weeks of life. Furthermore, they feel as if their jobs might be in jeopardy if they do opt to spend time with their bundle of joy. In order to combat the stigma around paternity leave, Dove Men+Care is offering $5,000 to new dads planning to take full-time paternity leave. Dove has pledged $1 million to new fathers across America for the next two years. “Less than 1 in 5 men in the U.S. are offered any paid paternity leave. Most …

Meet Merlin, The Water-Bottle-Sized 2-Year-Old Kitty That Is Taking Over Twitter Because Of His Pure Beauty

More Info: Instagram | Twitter | Website Image credits: merlin.griffith Not to be discouraged the couple continued their search. “The lady who had shown us around eventually noticed us indecisively meandering; she stopped to tell us that she had a favorite, but that he had some issues and was sick. She took us to the medical wing to show us this little kitten who was recovering from a head cold. When I was first told that he was blind, I was a bit worried. As a full-time student also working two jobs, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to provide Merlin with the attention he needed. As soon as I got to hold him, I think it was …

Many ‘still hurting’ nearly 5 months after Hurricane Michael

Drivers who have lived in the area for years second-guess themselves about whether they’re going the right way — the street signs, trees, and houses that once served as points of reference are gone. Many doctors’ offices haven’t reopened and one of the county’s two hospitals was closed, even though Bay County residents are experiencing hurricane-related health problems such as respiratory illness. Students in schools damaged by the storm have moved into other facilities, dropping enrollment by 14 percent. Bay County had about 183,000 residents before the storm, and about 7,800 people were estimated to be homeless in January. Shopping for groceries is burdensome since many retailers haven’t reopened yet. Many of those that have are selling limited goods from …

The Latest Vaginal Product Makes Goop’s Jade Eggs Seem Sane

There are certain things we would like to take for granted, but apparently can’t. One of these is that we don’t need to discourage the exfoliation of body cavities. Since this turns out not to be the case, let’s state this as simply as possible: Do Not Exfoliate Your Vagina (or anyone else’s). Over the years people have made a lot of money convincing women their genitals need work, be it deodorizers, magically powered jade eggs, or cosmetic surgery for the labia. All of which does a lot of harm, but still looks pretty mild compared to the latest product. We hate to give them the publicity, but you need to know we are not making this up. Anyone else imagine this …

Khloe Kardashian Unfollows Tristan Thompson On Instagram & Lashes Out On Twitter – ‘This Was Tristan’s Fault’ – Perez Hilton

The last axe has fallen… Khloe Kardashian has unfollowed Tristan Thompson on Instagram, and has now totally changed her tune on Twitter after initially defending him for allegedly cheating on her following Jordyn Woods‘ interview on Red Table Talk. On Saturday morning, the momma completely turned the tables, after initially calling out the 21-year-old for breaking up her family yesterday, she’s now putting the blame on her ex-BF for his alleged cheating: This has been an awful week & I know everyone is sick of hearing about it all (as am I). I’m a rollercoaster of emotions & have said things I shouldn’t have. Honestly, Tristan cheating on me & humiliating me, wasn’t such a shock as the first time. …

As we reported, Bieber was uncovering “key issues” from his past that insiders say were still plaguing his mental health. While none of those issues apparently had anything to do with his 22-year-old bride, the newlyweds confessed their marriage wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, either. Even though he’s been cozying up to pastor Carl Lentz since canceling his Purpose tour in 2017, the insider said Biebs is “becoming even more committed to his faith,” adding: How could you argue with that? Only time will tell! [Image via WENN.] Original Article : HERE ; This post was curated & posted using : RealSpecific

Tide Foundation gives consumers full control of personal data on blockchain

It seems that on a regular basis, we hear about massive data breaches or companies sharing highly personal information with third parties without a consumer’s permission or knowledge. Tide Foundation wants to change that by giving consumers complete control over their personal data on the blockchain by allowing them to manage their own encryption keys. The startup wants to take that notion a step further by giving users the ability to sell that personal information in an open marketplace that the company is announcing today. “The overall concept is that when a consumer engages with a business and provides that business with personally identifiable information, the Tide Protocol encrypts that information and provides the consumer with the only key to …

A look at Nigeria’s president as he secures a 2nd term

“We are moving from potentials to actualization,” Buhari intoned in his New Year’s address, nearly four years into office. The president is seen as unusually upright and reserved in this vibrant country of some 190 million people, where gregarious politicians spend heavily to secure lucrative posts — often becoming ensnared in graft. “He remains an aloof and disengaged leader, ‘walled off’ from his own government and party, and from Nigerians themselves,” Matthew Page and Sola Tayo recently wrote for the Chatham House think tank. But many Nigerians, remembering Buhari’s reputation for sometimes harsh discipline, had cheered when he unseated incumbent President Goodluck Johnathan in 2015, hoping he would act on vows to tame corruption and defeat a deadly Boko Haram …
