Smoking Cannabis As A Teen Linked To An Increased Risk Of Depression In Young Adulthood

Depression directly affects one in six adults over the course of a lifetime – and everything from pollution and artificial light to the bacteria that live in our gut could be (at least partly) to blame. Now, a new paper published in JAMA Psychiatry also links the mental illness to cannabis smoking as a teenager. Previous research has suggested that cannabis use moderately increases an individual’s risk of developing depression. While others have found no significant association when other variables are taken into consideration. Still others suggest cannabis use may actually decrease symptoms. The result is a mixed bag of results with no clear consensus of how cannabis affects mental health, at least as far as depression is concerned. Researchers from the University of Oxford, UK, and McGill University, Canada, have …

What Donald Trump’s giant White House golf simulator says about him

(CNN)Within the last few weeks, President Donald Trump had a room-sized golf simulator installed in his personal quarters at the White House, according to The Washington Post. Presidents have a lot on their minds. And they can’t just duck out to play a quick 18 holes on a whim. If swinging a club in a gold simulator helps them think, more power to them!

Sixteen percent of US adults own a smartwatch

The latest figures out of NPD show a continued uptick in smartwatch sales here in the States. The category has been a rare bright spot in an overall flagging wearable space, and the new numbers show gains pretty much across the board. In fact, the study puts smartwatch ownership at 16 percent among U.S. adults as of December — that figure is up from 12 percent a year prior. Unsurprisingly, it’s a younger demo driving that growth — specifically 18-34-year-olds, where smartwatch ownership is around 23 percent. Of course, Apple and the like have been looking to increase purchases with the older crowd, courtesy of more serious health features like last year’s addition of an ECG meter. Apple, Samsung and …

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN)On Tuesday, former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will appear in court — facing years in prison if convicted on corruption charges which seemed impossible less than a year ago. What is 1MDB? Political son Malaysia 1MDB scandal: Former PM arrested Scoops and scandal In early 2015, journalists from the Sarawak Report and Wall Street Journal began reporting that millions of dollars had been siphoned off the fund after allegedly securing a series of leaked documents. At first it seemed like the scandal might spell the end of Najib, as opponents — and even some within his party — demanded an investigation and called for him to resign. Behind the scenes, there were efforts to smother the …

4 Dolphins Have Now Died At A Marine Park In The Middle Of The Desert

Animal rights advocates took aim at Dolphinaris as well, saying that putting dolphins in pools on tribal land in the desert was tantamount to animal cruelty. Dolphinaris Arizona said it will close temporarily beginning Friday as a panel of experts investigates potential factors in the dolphin deaths. Two of the facility’s four remaining dolphins are being returned to Dolphin Quest, a company that loans dolphins to attractions, while the other two will be moved to another licensed facility while Dolphinaris Arizona is being evaluated. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said it’s aware of the latest dolphin death and is “working on the next course of action.” It declined to elaborate. Something Very Strange Happened To Death Rates In Europe During The 2008 Economic Crisis

Public health experts aren’t known for recommending governments induce recessions to extend lives. Wealthier nations have longer life expectancies, so death rates are expected to go up when the economy goes bad. Yet, sometimes the opposite is true. A study of 15 European countries before and during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis found the worse the economy got, the fewer people died. The reasons remain uncertain and explaining the effect could lead to important policy changes. Money can’t always buy you health, but on an individual level, higher incomes are associated with longer lives. Wealth pays for better health care, more nutritious diets, and a house in a “walkable” suburb. The comfortably off are also more likely to feel they have …

Democrats are drowning out Trump’s tweets

(CNN)Democrats finally have a bully pulpit of their own: the House of Representatives. Democrats have used their newfound power in the House to focus on investigations surrounding Trump, while forcing policy discussions on health care, climate change and gun control. As a result, the media and the public are talking about these issues instead of constantly responding to every provocation that comes from the President. Sign up for our new newsletter. The conversation in Washington has shifted to issues that are favorable to Democrats. They have also done so much to drown out Trump’s Twitter feed. If Democrats can …

Measles Cases Have Tripled In Europe

Last year, Europe saw 82,596 new cases of measles, three times as many as 2017, and a staggering 15 times more than the record low in 2016. 2018 saw the highest number of people contracting the disease in Europe in a decade. The disease can be fatal, with 72 children and adults dying last year because of it, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) report. Ninety-two percent of cases come from just 10 countries. The list, in order of most to least cases, is Ukraine, Serbia, Israel, France, Italy, Russia, Georgia, Greece, Albania, and Romania. Only six out of the 53 countries in the WHO Europe region didn’t have any new cases. Sixty-one percent of people that became infected required hospitalization. The WHO …

100-Million-Year-Old Amber Fossil Suggests Mosquitoes Carried Malaria When Dinosaurs Walked The Earth

Scientists have discovered a 100-million-year-old mosquito perfectly preserved in amber. They plan to use blood trapped inside the mosquito to clone dinosaurs and resurrect them from the dead. Just kidding. The ancient mosquito actually sheds light on the origins of malaria, a disease that kills over 400,000 people each year. The team of researchers from Oregon State University realized their little specimen belonged to a new genus and species, which they named Priscoculex burmanicus. It was found in amber in Myanmar that dates back to the mid-Cretaceous era. While the species is brand new, it shares many similarities with certain mosquitoes still buzzing about today, namely the anopheline mosquitoes, which are famous for carrying and transmitting malaria. P. burmanicus and …

The Owner Of The USB Discovered In Seal Poop Has Been Found, And The Story Is Wild

The mystery of how a USB stick came to be found in a frozen sample of leopard seal poop in New Zealand has been solved, and it’s an interesting journey, to say the least. Last week, the world was simultaneously surprised and intrigued when the story of the USB popping up unexpectedly made headlines.   Researchers at New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) run a leopard seal program to study the rare seals, and one of the best ways to do this is to look at their scat. It can tell a huge amount about what the seals eat, where they go, and their health. To get it, however, they need volunteers who collect the samples and …

New Mexico abortion bill called ‘most extreme in the nation’

OB/GYN: ‘ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO KILL A BABY’ IN 3RD TRIMESTER “This bill is a Trojan horse backed by the national abortion lobby in order to establish abortion as a human right by removing so-called ‘religious refusals’ and turn every hospital, clinic and doctor’s office into an abortion clinic or referral center,” Elisa Martinez, executive director of New Mexico Alliance for Life, told Fox News. Rep. Joanne Ferrary, a Democrat and co-sponsor of the bill, said it “simply removes an antiquated law that criminalizes health care.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP But opponents of the bill argue that beyond making abortion legal all nine months of pregnancy, it also forces medical professionals to perform abortions against their will. Duck Dynasty Star Makes Bonkers Claim: You Dont Need Health Care, Just Jesus

Instead of medicine, he said, people just need more Jesus: Robertson took exception to Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) backing a “Medicare for all” plan to create a single-payer system for health care.  It’s given to me by God. Eternal health care,” he said.  “But people get sick on Earth in human form,” he said. “The temporary reprieve is not worth it. I’m telling her, I have eternal health care and it’s free. Doctors can give you a little temporary reprieve, but they cannot save you from physical death. The doctors who treat you, they die, too.” “But you’re not dismissing that we need, people need health care, right?” Cavuto asked.  Robertson is 72; he did not address the other 22 …
