Manafort pleads not guilty in NY Supreme Court to fraud charges

(CNN)Paul Manafort pleaded not guilty Thursday in New York state’s Supreme Court to state fraud charges brought by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the third criminal case he has faced in recent years and one that may trigger a battle on double jeopardy grounds. As he was led into the courtroom, he walked with a slight limp, and once inside he required assistance from his attorney to rise from his seat. The judge set the next court date for October 9. Although Manafort’s attorney said his client would waive his appearance at upcoming pretrial court proceedings, the judge said he wouldn’t agree to that as a blanket measure, saying he would review the circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Manafort will …

Customer Secretly Films A Hooters Kitchen And People Are Disgusted

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a moment – very few of us choose to go to Hooters for the quality of the food. Sure, the wings, fries and onion rings are tasty enough but as far as memorable culinary experiences go… well, that’s not really the point is it? Image credits: Image credits: ViralHog. “My intentions were to have a few adult beverages and possibly some of their wings. To my surprise, I noticed multiple health and safety violations. Ranging from raw chicken on the floor, dirty drinks left on the counter. Even cleaning out the bottom of the fryer with the same utensils used for food service.” ViralHog “I witnessed three managers on duty two in the front …

Scientists And Doctors Are Mad As Hell At Prince Charles (For Good Reason)

Earlier this month, Prince Charles – the heir to the British throne – was praised by scientists for attempting to convince Donald Trump (in a 15-minute chat that ended up lasting an hour and a half) to take action on climate change. Now he’s been accused of using his Royal position to promote “dangerously misleading” pseudomedical advice after becoming a patron of a homeopathy group. Prince Charles, a vocal supporter of homeopathy, was announced as patron of the Faculty of Homeopathy on Tuesday.  Homeopathy operates on two pseudo-scientific principles: that “like cures like” and the “law of minimum dose”, the notion the lower the dose, the more effective it is. The idea, which was invented by German doctor Samuel Hahnemann in the 1970s, is that a condition …

Japan’s six-month notice to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission took effect Sunday. (Masanori Takei/Kyodo News via AP) He later added, according to

Boris Johnson backtracks over Scottish funding

The Barnett formula is used to share funds across the UK with allocations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland linked to their populations and any changes in spending in areas such as health and education in England. It’s controversial because levels of public spending per head are higher in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales than they are in England. Boris Johnson, a former London mayor, has been a persistent critic. In 2014, he said the then prime minister, David Cameron, had made a “slightly reckless promise” to retain it. He had previously described the system as being of “amazing political antiquity” and producing “inequitable outcomes”. Public services The SNP were among those expecting Boris Johnson to review funding arrangements for …

Coming to a school near you? The four-and-a-half-day week

A number of UK schools have taken the decision to move to a shorter working week because of funding shortages – and nowhere more so, it would appear, than in Birmingham. More than 20 schools in the city now plan to save money by sending children home at Friday lunchtime. Emma Jane Kirby visited one to learn more about the financial pressures they face. It’s even more of a squash than usual in the Bellfield Junior School hall this morning and small, scuffed knees knock against each other as the children sit cross-legged on the herringbone parquet floor. For the first time in their academic life, year two infants have been given special dispensation to join junior assembly. Come the …

What’s in your kids’ makeup? Asbestos recalls prompt regulation questions

Health advocates and the FDA say the extent of contamination of the cancer-causing material in cosmetics remains unknown, with no laws requiring testing Claires Stores Inc, an international accessories and cosmetics retailer tailored to kids and teens, has a motto: We make memories. But its customers may have been alarmed after safety alert warning people to stop using a Claires Jojo Siwa Makeup Set, as well as a contouring palette sold by Beauty Plus Global because the products had tested positive for asbestos. Both companies had issued a voluntary recall of the products at the end of May. The June warning came just two months after the FDA it said, Claires initially refused to recall the products in question. North …

Sarah Huckabee Sanders Goodbye Party And Civility For Its Own Sake

The CJR party report — like those of the New York Times and the Washington Post’s Erik Wemple — featured other disturbingly cavalier quotes. Another unnamed reporter described the shindig to CJR as being like “the end of a battle, or a decent game of rugby, where at the end of the day you shake hands.”  The White House press corps, like many other political insiders, is accustomed to doing its job by certain rules — polite opposition, bitter professional battles leavened by personal friendliness. The collapse of the norms that govern their day-to-day work and socializing may strike them as the most noticeable change in the status quo. But preserving those norms, it’s clear by now, will do nothing …

In Colorado, lawmakers passed a framework for public health insurance for residents in rural counties and bills designed to address the opioid crisis. In Maine, a new measure expands abortion access by allowing “advanced practice clinicians” such as physician assistants and registered nurses to perform abortion procedures ― not just doctors. Gov. Janet Mills (D) said the measure would expand abortion access, particularly to people living in rural areas. In January, New York …

How Ian Brady got access to teenagers in jail

As he lost weight, he was moved to the prison hospital. He was allowed to stay there even after he began eating again, in a room on the Mental Observation Landing, known as G2. But despite numerous objections made by staff and others over the years, arguing that Brady should be moved, he stayed on the Mental Observation Landing, and his privileges steadily increased. Brady was allowed to watch television with other patients and given duties that enabled him to move beyond the landing, cleaning toilets and …

According To Bill Gates, This Was His Biggest Ever Mistake In Business

Bill Gates is one of, if not, the biggest names in computer science, a dedicated philanthropist responsible for saving millions of lives, and the second richest man in the world – just behind Jeff Bezos. So, what could he possibly regret? Apparently, letting Google launch Android. The ex-CEO of Microsoft spilled the beans on this particular qualm at a “Lessons from Luminaries” event held by Village Global, a venture capitalist organization, in San Francisco. “In the software world, particularly for platforms, these are winner-take-all markets,” Gates said, adding, “So the greatest mistake ever is whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is.” He went on to say Android is the standard non-Apple phone platform, …

‘Living joyously is a radical act’: why America’s gay bars still matter

Fifty years after Stonewall, and with Trump trying to roll back LGBTQ rights, Dominic Rushe visits three gay bars in different states and finds them as vibrant and vital as ever The gay bar is in trouble. Fifty years after the Stonewall Inn in New York became the symbol for a new wave of gay activism, the three horsemen of the gay bar apocalypse gentrification, assimilation and technology have hollowed out their numbers. Rising rents have shuttered gay bars; more straight venues are accepting of gay patrons; and dating is something people now do with their phones. Even the term gay bar looks a little tired as the LGBTQ community finally comes to terms with its many rainbow stripes. Bare …
